CT Scan found a nodule

Post a new topicby monalexi on Tue Mar 25, 2008 11:52 pm

I'm new to this forum, I just found it randomly. Perhaps someone can put my skeptical and uneasy mind at.... well ease. I have been reading a bunch of these posts about SPN, I was just diagnosed with two of them, one on each lung. My problem is I'm not sure the age of most of the people on this site, but I am only 27 yrs. old. I have been smoking for 11 yrs. and my grandmother died of lung cancer I feel I am to young to have any serious problems even though I have hypertension which I take medication for. Something I have been on for some years now. Nothing was really said about the nodules except that I have to get another CT Scan in six months. Is there anyone that is knowledgeable about this that can perhaps put my mind at ease on this situation. I must say also that I have had cervical problems that have led to stage 1 cancer about a year ago. It is something that I haven't had rechecked in some time as well. It's one of those things that I would rather not think about. I'm just a little curious if that may have something to do with this. Whoever could give me some advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

What prompted you to get a lung CAT scan? Is your Dr. aware of your prior history of cervical cancer? Certainly, if you are still smoking, quit. Age is no barrier to such things, but statistically people with longer exposures to risk factors have a higher incidence of disease frequency. The longer people take risks the higher their probability of getting related diseases. It would be wise to make certain that your cervical cancer is in remission. Your medical team cannot make the best choices if you are not giving them all the pertinent information.

I went to the hospital for chest pain on that particular day and when they did a chest x-ray they discovered the nodule on my left lung, so they decided to get a CT Scan and that's when they found the other nodule on my right lung. After I starting having all the problems with my cervix I was getting treatment for it and then I moved across the country. My new doctor has been informed of my issues before, but for some reason is not to concerned with it. I have not had a pap in almost a year now. I will be addressing my doctor about this new cause for concern. I was just hoping someone would have a little more information on this subject, specifically, if it is normal for someone of my age to get it.

monalexi..... I assume you're referring to lung cancer. Lung cancer is not normal at all, at any age. That may sound a little cheeky, but it is true. The rate of lung cancer incidence tracks consistently with the use of inhaled tobacco. At the beginning of the 19th century lung cancer was very rare. A physician could go an entire career and even treat one case. Yes, they had tobacco then but it was relatively expensive and more frequently not inhaled. It was used in pipes and cigars. Once cigarettes started to be mechanically mass produced lung cancers became much more frequent. Tobacco related lung cancer is not common in younger people, but it does happen.

Nodules in the lungs have many causes. People naturally assume the worst, and the worst is a real possibility. Your family history and your personal history are red flags. If you feel your physician is not concerned enough get a second opinion. An oncologist specializes in cancers and would be a knowledgeable sounding board.
