hemoptysismy son is 6 years old and has a history of bronchitis in the spring and fall.He has always had nose bleeds. January of this year we had one side of his nose coterized and the doctor said he really did not see large membranes and would not recommend doing the other side. He has had many nose bleeds since then but He has been fine for 5 months(april to August 10)of bronchitis, until August 10, he saw a pulmonary doctor for sleep apnea and she said his spiro test was moderate and he would benifit with inhalers and we were given
orders to take 2 puffs of flovent in the morning and 2 at night and albuteral as needed. 2 days later he became light headed and said he does not feel well and started coughing. He has been coughing blood with mucus for 1 week, I took him to our family doctor and she said he as conjestion and is sensitive and she took a Q-tip with vasaline and pulled out 2 blood clots and sent us home with zertec (1 tsp. a day) I went to emergency last night the blood clots were so big when he threw up with mucus and they said he had hemoptysis and pneumonia. He is now on zithromax and promethazine w/codeine. He has not had any inhalers and seems to look and feel better without them. Could the inhalers have caused him to become this sick? I know they thin the lining, but if someone does not need them and the doctor does not know they have hemoptysis could it cause the bronchitis/hemoptysis/pneumonia to flair up. I will ask for a referral on the military base to go see a specialist, until then - thank you for your answers or comments. This has been very frustrating. at
Re: hemoptysisit is unlikely that the inhalers caused the hemoptysis. He should have his blood clotting ability checked and see the ENT physician again. It would be good to have a pulmonologist look at him and his pulmonary function tests and determine if he needs the inhalers or other intervention.
