hemoptysis-

Hi,

I am a 22 year old light smoker (5 cigs or less per day). Tonight for the first time I coughed and I think there may have been a few flecks of blood. But I'm not sure, I hadn't brushed my teeth yet, maybe it was chocolate or something. Anyway, I am here searching on the internet because I am worried. Perhaps it could be from my irritated nose, which has been bleeding a little the last couple of days? Do I need to go to see a doctor to get some sort of examination, or do I only really need to go if it happens again? I am planning on quitting smoking April 10th. Thanks for your help.

coughing up blood can certainly be frightening. However you describe only a few flecks and this is generally nothing to worry about. It can easily be from your nose, especially if you have had some nose bleeds recently. However, I can't tell you that for sure since i have not seen you myself. Speaking with your doctor about this would be a good idea. If the blood continues or worsens then you definately need to see a physician soon. The best thing to do is to stop smoking, good luck!
