coughing up blood

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon May 06, 2002 12:37 pm

I've had a pretty bad cough for like six days now with phlegm in my chest and all. Two ddays ago i coughed up blood in my phlegm. i have no medical insurance so i haven't been able to go to doctor or anything. My mom doesnt think to much of it, she says the blood could be from forcing my self to cough and i've probably scraped my throat. Now I've been a smoker for two years and I've smoked marijuana for a year. I have two questions is possible that i've irritated my throat and thats the cause for the blood. Also is possible to have gotten lung cancer so soon and so young im only 20 yrs old. I know you cant give a diagnosis but anyhelp would be much appreciated.also i kind have this pain in my chest like its in my lungs or something and i can taste blood in my mouth but when i spit out phlegm it doesnt always have blood in it. its only occasionally. Its scaring me. Thanks.

There are hospitals with doctors that see patients without insurance and that is a good option for you. Just call the area hospitals and ask them. It is possible to have just a streak of blood from coughing but it shouldn't be more than that. It would be unusual for you to have lung cancer from smoking this early but it can happen. You should stop smoking now as that is the best thing you can do for your health. Otherwise, if the blood returns or worsens you should go to an emergency room right away to have it evaluated.

You definitely need to get to a doctor. You could have pneumonia or bronchitis and you must get anitbiotics for that. As far as smoking it is just going to take longer for you to get better.
Good Luck
