Although ultrasound is an excellent way of looking at the kidneys and is very sensitive in detecting blockages, cysts, and tiny stones, it is not perfect when it comes to picking up solid tumors or masses. The problem is that some masses look very similar to normal renal tissue. For that reason, we tend to "over-read" kidney ultrasounds because we don't want to miss these things that could be masses. Fortunately for us, CT is around to bail us out.
