Cystic Fibrosis

My 16yr old son with cf has started to cough up blood. When he lays down to sleep he feels a pop in his throat and starts to choke. The first few minutes are very frightening as he cant catch his breath and almost drowns in his own blood, this started around 6 months ago and is becoming more frequent. My son had a permanent port put into his chest just before this started to happen. Does anyone think there may be a connection or is it infection related. He has had several investigations into his lungs and throat and they cannot see anything obvious and are now saying he may just have to get used to it.
This is not an answer I am happy with, hence my first steps of using a computer (Please keep in mind my computer laughs at me when I switch it on!!) and trying to come up with some answers. If anyone out there is suffering the same or as any answers please reply.
