CF and pediatric chiropractic

Post a new topicby therellies on Mon Jan 19, 2009 11:06 pm

My granddaughter is 3 1/2 yrs. with CF. A chiropractor is claiming to be able to get her off all medications with 3 times weekly neck adjustments. Any truth to this?

Cystic fibrosis shows different levels of symptoms in individual patients. Some are affected more severely and others less so. CF can clearly be a serious disorder at any age and it can require a sustained and uninterrupted clinical approach for the best treatment. It is not something to stop and start medical treatment without the expert advice of a medical specialist.

As I understand chiropractory it is based on the proper alignment and flexibility of the spinal column. When the spine is 'out of alignment' it results in certain problems that readjustments can correct. CF is a medical condition that is not at all related to any spinal misalignment. It has a genetic cause and its symptoms have particular and proven medical treatments. I cannot see where realigning a misaligned spine would treat CF or its symptoms.

Obviously I do not know what is happening with your granddaughter or what this Chiropractor is proposing to accomplish. There is an International Pediatric Chiropractic Association whose website claims various treatments appropriate for all ages from prenatal on up. You can access this resource for their input.

Personally I would not make any changes in her treatment without the full understanding of her medical doctor. I would not subject her to chiropractic care without the full understanding of her medical doctor.
