COPD & upper back pain

My husband has COPD. Off and on he has pain or tension in his upper back (about where lungs are located) which will last for 3-4 days-no other symptoms. Does anyone know what causes this? Is it common in COPD patients? Any suggestions? Sometimes just using BenGay will help for a while. Otherwise, he has to resort to a pain killer which he doesn't like to do. THANKS, Connie
