Chronic coughNot sure what exactly this is so I thought I would ask for clarification.
For years I have had an issue where while sleeping I will suddenly wake up with a strong throat tickle. I liken it to when sugar goes down your throat wrong and causes a sudden cough that is almost impossible to stop. This is usually not a big issue, I just have a really strong and harsh cough for a few seconds to a minute, and the sensation dies down. The location of the irritation I would say is slightly below the voicebox. Recently I had a nasty flu which invovled a lot of coughing and lasted well over 2 weeks. In the end all symptoms died off except for the cough which subsided for quite a while. I figured it was no big deal. It has now been months since that flu and the vast majority of the time I am just fine. But on occassion (often in the evenings or mornings or when feeling tired) the cough comes back and is a throat tickle that provokes a lot of throat clearing and coughing. It's much like when you have the flu and can't cough anything up but also can't stop coughing. This will last for minutes to hours at times and sometimes I just go to sleep with it. I have decided it's not likely it's just left over flu (after months with no other symptoms and the onset being sudden). I am not sure if this counts as chronic cough or should be looked at (I will bring it up with my doctor) but wanted to see if it sounds like what is described as chronic cough when dealing with COPD Thanks for any feedback.
Re: Chronic coughI suspect this maybe related to esophageal reflux and minor aspiration events while you're supine. Discuss this with your doctor. If it is then just a change in eating habits, some OTC antacid meds or a postural modification should control it.
