my mother has had a problem breathing for about 4 days. It all started about a week ago when she woke up and she lost her voice. Then it turned into a severe cough and then to shortness of breath. The shortness of breath just started about 3 days ago, but it only happens when she gets up to do something. For example.. when she goes to take a shower she has to take a break and sit down afterwards. It's starting to scare us. She's fine as long as she dosen't get off of the couch. I was hoping that maybe you could help us, and tell us what this might be, and how bad it can get. Thanks in advance.

It can be many things but bronchospasm from a viral illness may be the problem. It could also be pneumonia or several other things. If she has not done so already, an evaluation by her physician is appropriate.
